چکیده

Consider a communication link where the last hop is wireless and TCP is used as transport protocol over the end-to-end connection. We study the capability of the link layer to hide losses over the wireless link to TCP in spite of the time varying transmission quality. We focus on linklayer retransmission mechanisms and determine their parameter setting in such a way that a reliable communication link is provided. In particular, chosen a significant QoS metric at the transport layer and fixed its targeted value, we adapt the maximum number of link-layer transmissions to the characteristics of the wireless link so that the desired QoS at the transport layer is provided. Results showing the impact of the link-layer retransmissions on TCP performance are derived by using analytical models based on Markovian techniques.

TCP-cognizant adaptive forward error correction in wireless networks

Wireless links are characterized by high bit error rates and intermittent connectivity. These can significantly degrade the performance (goodput) of TCP over wireless networks since non-congestion related packet losses can be misinterpreted by TCP as indications of network congestion, resulting in unnecessary congestion controls, and thus a reduced goodput. In this paper, we propose a technique...

Improving End-to-End Performance of TCP Using Link-Layer Retransmissions over Mobile Internetworks

TCP does not perform well in networks with high packet error rates, such as those with wireless links, since TCP assumes network congestion to be the major cause for packet losses. Wireless losses make TCP unnecessarily initiate its congestion control mechanism which results in poor performance in the form of low throughput and high interactive delay. We investigate, through computer simulation...

Almost a decade long research on the performance of TCP in wireless networks has resulted in a several proposals and solutions to the problem of throughput throttling. Over the years, end-to-end solutions [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], splitconnection schemes [7], [8] and adaptive link-layer solutions [1], [9] have been proposed, refined and evaluated for their relative merit [1]. Several of the...

Improving Bandwidth-power Efficiency of Homogeneous Wireless Networks Using On-meet Threshold Strategy (RESEARCH NOTE)

Over two decades, a problem of location dependent has been focused for improving the communication Bandwidth-Power Efficiency of homogeneous networks. The efficiencies of communication links are weakened by the Hidden Terminal Problem.  Thus we propose a Fine – Tune Strategy for analyzing the On-Off communication region. We were observed that the proposed technique had been able to track and mo...
